Felted Trellis Toque!

A new shape -- not for the timid!

The term "toque" has been used since medieval times to describe a hat with flat sides, a flat top and little or no brim. Up until today, ornate toques appear on the heads of men and women throughout Asia and Africa as part of daily wardrobe.

Now you can flaunt your worldly fashion sense, too! And give yourself a little extra boost of flair to get your through these cold months ahead.

The size of the finished hat is largely determined by the blocking. Instructions are given for small and large sizes, and instruction provided about how to make your own flat-top block and where to order a commercially made form.

Felted Faux Fair Isle Toque!

This is "toque" in the medieval sense: a hat with flat sides, a flat top and no brim. (Not to be confused with "tuque", a brimless soft cap worn by fur trappers in Quebec and Manitoba in the 1800s, and still worn proudly by Canadians today.)

True "fair isle" knitting uses multiple colors for both the foreground and background of the pattern. We get an approximation of this style of colorwork by using Kureyon color-changing yarn.

Instructions are given both in a chart and line-by-line for two motifs, diamond and zig zag. And of course, you can always make up your own!

Classic and Starburst Felted Beret Knitting Pattern

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The felted beret might be the world’s most perfect hat. Warm, durable, quite waterproof and – most important – it won’t squash your hair. Even a hairdo with clips can be slipped under a beret and you arrive at your destination warm, dry and still looking fresh. Add to that the fact that it looks good on every face and you understand why it is a perennial favorite across the globe.

This pattern contains instructions for two hats: the Classic Beret and the Starburst Beret. Both are designed to work with Noro's Kureyon 100% wool yarn, which creates dramatic color changes throughout the hats. Five sizes range from Child Small through Adult XLarge, so you can easily make one for everybody!
